The Certified Energy Auditor is an individual who evaluates and analyzes how energy is being used in a facility, identifies energy conservation opportunities and makes recommendations where consumption can be reduced or optimized.
Objetives
- To raise the professional standards of those engaged in energy auditing.
- To improve the practice of energy auditors by encouraging energy auditing professionals in a continuing education program of professional development.
- To identify persons with acceptable knowledge of the principles and practices of energy auditing through completing an examination and fulfilling prescribed standards of performance and conduct.
- To award special recognition to those energy auditing professionals who have demonstrated a high level of competence and ethical fitness in energy auditing.
Eligibility
In addition to meeting one of the criteria below, candidates in the U.S. are required to verify completion of a minimum of 2 hours of Safety Training within the last three years and participation in five commercial audits within the last three years. Two of the audits are a minimum of 10,000 sq. ft. Also, the audits have been of at least two different building types.

*Related experience in energy auditing and/or participating in a team doing energy assessments.
In-Training Option
If you do not meet one of the eligibility criteria above, you can still apply for an in-training certification, CEA-IT. In order to gain the in-training certification, you must attend a CEA preparatory training seminar or obtain a degree from an approved training provider, submit the CEA-IT certification application, and pass the CEA certification examination. The CEA-IT certification is valid for six years, which allows you time to meet the full CEA certification eligibility requirements.
The Masters Level CEA certification is designed to reach beyond the typical equipment replacements and develop a plan which considers additional areas of energy such as indoor air quality, code compliance, operation & maintenance, risk mitigation, commissioning, and investment grade details.
Requirements
All CEA candidates must attend a CEA prepatory training seminar, provided by an approved training provider, submit a CEA certification application, and pass an open book examination, which is proctored by an approved exam administrator.
The examination is based on an approved Body of Knowledge, which includes the main subject areas and the percentages of each included in the examination.
